Meet Dmitriy “Dima” Chernov, EdD, a Spring 2025 graduate from the EdD Kinesiology program at CSP Global. Dr. Chernov is a dedicated educator currently teaching anatomy and physiology, human biology, nutrition, and pathophysiology across several New York institutions, including York College (CUNY), Kingsborough Community College (CUNY), Touro University, and Molloy University.

Bridging Communication and Kinesiology

Dr. Chernov’s career has consistently blended teaching, research, and applied work in exercise physiology and nutrition. Before entering academia, he worked in media and advertising—a background that instilled in him the value of clear communication. This has become a cornerstone of his teaching philosophy. Having struggled as a student with instructors who simply read from textbooks, Dr. Chernov prioritizes clarity, engagement, and accessibility.

His focus on deep understanding over rote memorization has made his hands-on teaching style highly effective, earning him top ratings from his students. To further expand his expertise, he decided to pursue a doctorate in kinesiology to deepen his understanding of human performance and contribute original research to the health and sports industry.

Balancing Academic Rigor and Professional Life

Dr. Chernov chose CSP Global because the online structure offered the freedom to balance a full-time teaching schedule, family life, and intensive research without pausing his career.

“The program gave me a strong academic foundation, excellent mentorship, and the flexibility I needed to bring my passion for exercise physiology and nutrition into meaningful research on athlete recovery and performance,” he shares.

The online format was essential for managing his diverse responsibilities.

“The biggest benefit is that it gave me access to quality education without having to step away from my work. I could connect with faculty and classmates across the country and at the same time apply what I was learning directly to my teaching and projects.”

Pioneering Research in Sports Nutrition and Recovery

For his dissertation, “The Effects of Kefir Consumption on Perceived Athletic Performance and Recovery in Grappling Athletes,” Dr. Chernov investigated how fermented products affect performance and post-exercise recovery in mixed martial arts (MMA) athletes. This topic stemmed from a long-standing interest in metabolism and probiotics.

“With my background in nutrition and exercise physiology, it felt like a perfect fit,” says Dr. Chernov. “It’s still a passion project, and I’m working on publishing my findings because I believe it has strong potential for real-world use in sports nutrition and athlete health.”

Translating Doctoral Research into the Classroom

Since graduating, Dr. Chernov has maintained a full teaching schedule while developing innovative course materials. This year, he built a comprehensive human biology course for CUNY that includes case studies, interactive tools, and a YouTube channel called CherNotes for supplemental instruction.

“I wanted the course to be very student-centered, to make students curious and help them understand the material, not just memorize,” he explains. “Hearing positive feedback from students has been very rewarding.”

Looking ahead, Dr. Chernov plans to publish his dissertation results and explore international teaching collaborations. He specifically hopes to connect U.S. and Eastern European academic communities in Ukraine to advance the fields of kinesiology, nutrition, and human performance.

Advice for Future Kinesiology Scholars

Dr. Dima Chernov encourages the next generation of doctoral students to look beyond the degree itself:

“Stay curious and keep growing. The doctorate is not only about finishing a dissertation, but also about finding your own voice as a professional. Use the mentorship, connect with classmates, and don’t be afraid to follow the topics that truly inspire you.”
